What is blurred vision?

Blurred vision (often confused with fuzzy vision) is when objects are seen as if through a cloudy glass. This condition can also lead to colour dullness and halos around light sources.

What are the symptoms of blurred vision?

Blurred vision can be caused by various reasons. Blurred vision is not the same as blurred vision, which is caused by the appearance of visual acuity in the form of a “fuzzy” image. The combination of symptoms will vary depending on the underlying cause, but may occur:

  • Blurred vision or wavering eyes;
  • Dry eyes;
  • The appearance of halos around light sources;
  • Light sensitivity;
  • Tearful eyes;
  • Impaired night vision;
  • Redness and soreness of the eyes (e.g. red eyes).

What causes blurred vision?

Blurred vision doesn’t happen on its own, it’s a symptom of another condition. So, many other conditions can contribute to blurred vision. Here’s a look at some of the most common ones:

  • Cataracts, where the lens of the eye loses its transparency. Cataracts normally develop during the ageing process and are therefore most commonly found in older people.
  • Changes and damage to the cornea (the clear covering at the front of the eye), including infections and inflammation, can also cause blurred vision.
  • Other causes that can contribute to blurred vision include diabetes, optic nerve disease and macular degeneration.

How is blurred vision diagnosed?

The eye care professional will diagnose the cause of blurred vision by first reviewing the symptoms. During the examination, questions will be asked, eye tests will be carried out, such as measuring intraocular pressure and examining the eyes through a slit lamp.

What help is available?

Blurred vision can be a sign of other health problems, so if you are experiencing the above symptoms, it is important to visit your eye specialist or family doctor. They will be able to determine whether your blurred vision is related to a more serious health problem, check your eye health and advise you on what to do next.

Frequently asked questions
