What are piercing eyes?

A chalazion is a small, painless swelling, lump or cyst that slowly appears on the eyelid and is sometimes confused with a barley. It is not dangerous and usually disappears on its own. It can sometimes look quite threatening, but is usually painless and rarely needs treatment.

What are the symptoms of watery eyes?

Chalazion appears on the lower or upper eyelid as a painless lump or swelling. It can sometimes be confused with barley as the symptoms are quite similar. However, chalazion takes a much longer period of time to develop and usually appears under the skin of the eyelid rather than on the margin. Also, it is slightly firmer and does not normally cause pain. However, in rare cases, if the chalazion is caused by an infection, the lump may be red and quite painful. Symptoms:

  • A painless lump, usually in the upper eyelid.
  • Mild irritation that causes watery eyes.
  • Blurred vision.

What causes watery eyes?

Our eyelids are covered with many tiny glands called meibomian glands, which produce a sebaceous secretion that keeps our eyes moist and healthy.

Chalazion occurs when one of these glands becomes blocked. The sebaceous secretion inside slowly builds up into a cyst, which appears on the eyelid as a small bump that may harden or enlarge over time.

How is the diagnosis of strabismus performed?

Determined by routine eye examination. Your eye care professional will suggest the best treatment options for you.

What help is available?

Chalazions are mostly harmless and should decrease over time and eventually disappear on their own. This can take several months, so to speed up the process, it is recommended to regularly apply a warm compress to the affected eye. This will help to soften the contents of the cyst and encourage it to rupture spontaneously.

If the chalazion persists, becomes painful or affects your vision, you should see your GP for a more detailed examination.

If the chalazion is caused by an infection, antibiotics may be prescribed or, in some cases, the mass may need to be removed. For persistent chalazion causing blurred vision or irritation, you may be referred to an eye surgeon for removal of the mass.
