A professional medical consultation is needed to pinpoint the cause of your earache or hearing loss. There are many different types of ear diseases, so we will only discuss the most common ones.

Mycosis fungoides (fungus) of the ear

Frequent and intensive cleaning of the gums, a moist and warm environment, damaged and swollen gingival skin, and impaired general immune reactivity all play a role in the disease.

Symptoms:
– Intense ear pain, discomfort, often itching.
– Characteristic curd-like discharge.

Treatment:
Keep the ear away from water. Keep the ear away from the ear and keep the ear plugs away from the ear (periodic cleaning of the ear canals is necessary).

Eczema

Eczema can affect both the eardrum and the external auditory meatus. It can be caused by persistent local irritation, urination from the ear, exposure to dusty environments. Eczema is provoked by metabolic disorders and gastrointestinal disorders.

Symptoms:
Reddening, thickening, itching, possible urination.

Treatment:
Protect the ear from water, disinfectant sprays if it is wet, hormonal ointments if it does not improve, adjust diet and lifestyle.

Inflammation of the outer ear

Local inflammation of the outer ear – shunvote. This is a limited inflammation of the sebaceous gland of the hair follicle of the ear.

Symptoms:
– Sudden onset of intense pain in the ear. The pain intensifies when touching the ear, talking, chewing.

Treatment:
Topical – alcohol drops, topical antibiotic ointments.

Diffuse inflammation of the outer ear

Frequent and intensive cleaning of the gums, a moist and warm environment, damaged and swollen gingival skin, and impaired general immune reactivity all play a role in the disease.

Symptoms:
– Intense ear pain.
– Purulent discharge.
– Swollen, reddened skin of the earlobe and/or ears.
– Temperature may rise. Sometimes the pain is so intense that painkillers do not help. There may be painful yawning.

Treatment:
Keep the ear away from water. General anaesthetics. Local antibiotic solutions. Sometimes systemic antibiotics are prescribed.

Bony land growths – egoostosis

Exostoses – bony land growths. They are more common in people who enjoy swimming, diving and hunting.

Symptoms:
Bony landoid growths grow in the bony part of the landoid, more commonly in both ears. Usually growing on several sides. It can grow to different sizes and partially narrow the larynx or block it completely.

Treatment:
As long as the exostoses are small – observation, protective plugs when swimming in cold water
If the exostoses cause clinical symptoms or interfere with the wearing of hearing aids – surgical treatment is recommended.

Serous otitis

Disease of the middle ear, where fluid builds up in the middle ear but there is no sign of inflammation.

Symptoms:
– Sudden onset of squinting.
– Feeling as if your ear has been pinched.
– Murmurs may occur.
– Hearing your own voice in your head.

Treatment:
Treatment of diarrhoea and upper respiratory tract infections. Chewing and blowing exercises. If this treatment is ineffective, surgery – tympanostomy.

Sulphur stopper

Cheese is made for all people. Together with the hairs of the landa, it has a protective function. When it dries normally, it leaves the larynx as the lower jaw moves.

Symptoms:
– Suddenly, often after bathing, ear congestion and hearing loss.
– Sulphur can stuff the holes in the inserts of hearing aids, cause resonance of the aids, and impair the results of hearing rehabilitation.

Treatment:
Clean the sulphur mechanically, wash it if there is no perforation of the eardrum.

Acute otitis media

Infection in the middle ear is most often introduced through the ear canal, swallowing or blowing the nose, especially if the nose is blocked or stuffy. The most common complication of influenza is a cold.

Symptoms:
– Significant, tingling pain in the ear, which intensifies during the night.
– Increased temperature.
– Crackling, “gurgling” in the ear.
– Impaired hearing.

Treatment:
Painkillers for long-acting pain, antibiotics if the condition is bad or the disease worsens.

Ear hygiene – the secret to health?

It is important to maintain a balance when it comes to ear hygiene, as cleaning your ears too thoroughly can lead to the development of ear infections. The outer lining of the ear contains secretions that protect the skin from damage, and cleaning the ears too thoroughly leaves the skin unprotected, making it easier for various infections to enter. Special attention should be paid to ear care by those who are prone to ear infections.

Tips for cleaning your ears:

  • Never clean your ears with sharp or pointed objects. These can damage the ear canal or eardrum.
  • Do not use hygienic ear buds. Cleaning your ears with earplugs pushes earwax deeper into the eardrum, which can damage your hearing.
  • Don’t overdo it! Clean your ears carefully: do not rub, soap or use a strong stream of water.
  • Rub wet earlobes with your finger and dry them with a towel when you’re done washing.
