What is an eye twitch?
An eye twitch is an involuntary spasm of the eyelid muscles, usually in one eye. Although it can be annoying, it is completely harmless and painless and goes away on its own. Many people experience episodes of eye twitching. This is a very common condition that can occur in anyone and at any time, and usually starts and goes away on its own.
What are the symptoms of eye twitching?
Eye twitching causes a blinking sensation, eyelid trembling or a mild eyelid spasm. The twitching can be repetitive, occurring every few seconds and lasting for several minutes. Many people may not even notice the eye twitching. But the onset and spontaneous disappearance of these intermittent episodes can last for days or weeks.
What causes eye twitching?
Eyelid twitching can occur at any time in your life, for no apparent reason. However, there are a number of lifestyle factors that can trigger or aggravate spasms:
- Lack of sleep or tiredness;
- Dehydration;
- Stress or anxiety;
- Eye strain;
- Eye irritation;
- Excessive caffeine or alcohol intake;
- Side effects of certain medicines.
It can also be a sign of other common eye diseases such as blepharitis, dry eye syndrome or conjunctivitis.
How is the diagnosis of eye twitching performed?
Eyelid twitching usually does not require treatment, as the symptoms resolve spontaneously after a few days or a couple of weeks.
Stronger and more recurrent eyelid spasms may also indicate another type of eye twitching – benign essential blepharospasm – occurring later in life, usually in both eyes. If you have doubts about eyelid twitching or if your symptoms become chronic, see an eye specialist or general practitioner.
What help is available?
As the most common causes of twitching are lifestyle-related, you can try a few things to ease the symptoms if they persist:
- Apply a warm compress to relax the muscles;
- Regulate your caffeine and alcohol intake;
- Take regular breaks when working on the computer or watching TV;
- Use eye drops regularly.
