Maintenance of hearing aids
A hearing aid is made up of several different parts, each of which needs to be cleaned regularly to ensure maximum performance and lifetime of your hearing aid.
If unmaintained, hearing aids can quickly break down, make low-quality sound and hiss. We recommend that you buy hearing aid care kits with your new hearing aid, which you can find at all Optics World vision and hearing centres.
Basic tips on how to care for your hearing aid:
- Keep your hearing aids in their boxes.
- Take care of drying your hearing aids.
- After removal from the ear, wipe all parts of the hearing aid with a dry cloth or tissue.
- Protect hearing aids from moisture. Remove your hearing aids before going to the sauna or bath.
- Avoid contact with make-up and sprays that can damage the hearing aid.
- If your ears sweat more when using an over-the-ear hearing aid, wipe your hearing aids regularly with a dry cloth or tissue.
Seasonal hearing aid maintenance
Hearing aid care in winter and autumn
- Moisture is the biggest enemy of hearing aids. If your hearing aid gets wet, remove the batteries and gently wipe with a tissue. Then let it dry naturally or in a dedicated drying machine.
- Keep out the cold. Do not leave your hearing aid where it is cold and damp, e.g. in a car.
- Wear headgear – not only will you not get cold, but it will also protect your hearing aid from condensation.
- Take extra batteries, as the cells will drain more quickly at colder temperatures.
Hearing aid care in summer
- Dry your hearing aid regularly. In summer, it is especially important to protect your hearing aids from moisture – whether from sweat, bathing or rain.
- Do not leave hearing aids in direct sunlight – in hot sun, the plastic housing of the hearing aid can become deformed.
- Apply sunscreen or insect repellent before wearing hearing aids. Different sprays and creams can damage the instruments. Therefore, only put the hearing aids in after the products have fully absorbed into the skin/dried.
Hearing aid batteries
New hearing aid batteries can last from three to several days. The duration depends on how you use your hearing aid. When it’s time to change the batteries, your hearing aid will start making short beeps. The device will start working as soon as you close the battery cover. If you want the batteries to last longer, turn off your hearing aid when you are not using it. You can do this by opening the battery cover.
