What are piercing eyes?

Sore eyes are often a sign of an eye disorder or allergy, and usually go away quickly and are easy to treat. Sore eyes are very common and it is likely that absolutely everyone has experienced them at some point. Although it can cause discomfort, it is not usually worth worrying about, but it can be a symptom of an eye disorder or allergy.

What are the symptoms of watery eyes?

The most common symptoms of watery eyes are:

  • Redness;
  • Eye redness;
  • Itching;
  • Tears.

What causes watery eyes?

There are many causes of watery eyes, the most common being:

  • Allergies – in most cases, eye irritation is related to allergies. This happens when the eyes are irritated by allergens such as dust, pet hair or dander, pollen (in the case of hay fever) and certain products such as make-up or face creams.
  • Conjunctivitis – watery eyes can be a symptom of this common eye disorder. Conjunctivitis is accompanied by red eyes, a feeling of pain or burning, and sometimes discharge from the eye. If you suspect that you have conjunctivitis, see your eye specialist. If conjunctivitis is caused by an infection, you will be prescribed antibiotic eye drops.
  • Dry eyes – Dry eyes occur when the production of tears, which help keep the eyes healthy and moist, is impaired. When tears are inadequate or flow or evaporate too quickly, the eyes can become watery and irritated.
  • Blepharitis – this disorder, caused by an infection or skin disease, affects the eyelids. In addition to redness and swelling of the eyelids, blepharitis can also cause irritation and dryness of the eyes.
  • Computer-induced eye strain – spending a lot of time in front of a computer screen can lead to watery eyes, blurred vision, headaches and eye discomfort.
  • Wearing contact lenses – regular contact lens wearers are more likely to dry out their eyes, especially if they wear their lenses for too long, which can lead to eye irritation.
  • Eczema – if eczema affects your eyelids, it can cause redness and irritation.

How is the diagnosis of strabismus performed?

Your eye care professional will assess the symptoms you are experiencing, their duration and frequency. Only when the underlying cause of your watery eyes has been identified will the eye care professional be able to prescribe the right treatment.

  • Normally, eye drops help to relieve irritation and help to moisten the eyes a little. Applying a cool compress to the eyes can also help to relieve the sensation of irritation.
  • If the eye irritation is caused by an allergy, you should contact your GP or pharmacist, who may recommend antihistamines or certain eye drops to relieve the symptoms.

It is important not to rub your eyes, as although this may provide temporary relief, it can make the condition worse and cause other problems.

What help is available?

For many people, eye irritation does not last long and usually goes away on its own.

However, if you have frequent watery eyes, or if you have noticed that your vision is blurred, or if you have pain in your eyes, you should visit your eye care professional. He or she will be able to identify the possible causes and recommend the most appropriate treatment for you.

Although it is not always possible to prevent watery eyes, there are some things you can do to reduce the likelihood of watery eyes:

  • Take regular breaks when working on the computer to avoid
  • When you go to bed, remove your make-up and wash your face;
  • Keep pets out of your bedroom to avoid irritation caused by their hair and dander;
  • When you go to bed, close the windows to prevent your eyes from being irritated by external sources of allergens.
