What is ptosis?
The condition where the upper eyelid droops or falls off, more commonly known as droopy eyelid, can occur at any age and affects one or both eyes. It is most common in older adults.
Depending on the severity of the condition, drooping eyelids can interfere with vision, depending on how much of the eye is covered by the eyelid. Ptosis can be long-lasting, but in most cases it will disappear on its own or after surgery.
What are the symptoms of ptosis?
The main sign is a closed eyelid, with one or both upper eyelids drooping or closing. This can lead to other symptoms:
- Loss of vision;
- Dry eyes;
- Tearful eyes;
- Pain around the eyes;
- Headaches.
Your eye specialist may refer you to an eye doctor to assess your long-term ptosis and make sure there is no other medical condition causing it. If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, it is advisable to see your GP for an eye examination.
What causes ptosis?
Ptosis can occur in anyone, but it is more common in older adults, as the condition can occur during the natural ageing process. The eye muscle responsible for lifting the eyelid becomes stretched with age and can cause the eyelid to droop. Some people are born with ptosis, but this is rare. Ptosis can also be caused by trauma, severe stress and neurological problems.
How is ptosis diagnosed?
Ptosis is diagnosed during a routine eye examination.
What help is available?
The cause and severity of the condition will determine the treatment, but surgery can usually resolve the problem. Your GP will explain the best treatment option for you.
You can’t actually prevent ptosis, but you can stop it from progressing. One way to do this is to make sure you have an eye examination every two years.
