What is strabismus?
Strabismus, also known as strabismus, occurs when the eyes look in different directions. It is particularly common in young children, but can occur in anyone at any age.
Strabismus is usually apparent at an early age and can be spotted by a GP or eye specialist during a routine eye examination, so it is important to have your child’s eyes checked regularly.
There are several types of strabismus, depending on which way the eye looks:
- Exotropia – when the eye is facing outwards;
- Esotropia – when the eye is turned inwards;
- Hypertropia – when the eye is pointing upwards;
- Hypotropia – when the eye is pointed downwards;
- Cyclotropy is a mixture of the above types.

What help is available?
Early treatment of strabismus can lead to faster results. There are four commonly used treatments:
- In the case of strabismus caused by a visual impairment such as myopia (myopia), glasses can help;
- Eye exercises to control muscles can help train the eyes to work together;
- If glasses don’t solve the problem, surgery may also be an option as a treatment option. Surgery involves correcting the muscles that control movement so that they contract as needed;
- Injections into the eye muscles can help to relax the muscles in a short time so that they can contract properly;
In some children, strabismus can lead to the development of lazy eye, which should be treated first.
