What is farsightedness?
Hyperopia, also known as hyperopia, affects the ability to see objects in close proximity. People can usually see distant objects clearly, but closer objects are often not clearly visible. This is a relatively common and easily correctable disorder.
In a healthy eye, the eye muscles need to be fully relaxed in order to see objects within a short distance of the room. This means that the entire focusing ability is reserved for clear vision of close objects. If you are farsighted, the focusing muscles are not relaxed even when looking at distant objects, which means that they have to work harder to see closer objects clearly.
What are the symptoms of hyperopia?
People with hyperopia will find that they can see objects in the distance clearly, but that objects close up are out of focus or look quite blurry.
Farsightedness makes all processes at close distances difficult and tiring for the eyes, as the eyes work very hard to see the near image. Often this causes excessive strain, making it difficult to read or use the phone. You may find that you try to squint or pull objects away from you at arm’s length in order to see a clear view.
What causes hyperopia?
Hyperopia occurs when light entering the eye is not properly focused at the back of the eye. This can lead to:
- Eyeball too short;
- Excessively flat cornea;
- The lens of the eye does not focus the image properly.
It is not always clear what causes these problems, and quite often farsightedness can be inherited from parents. Age-related hyperopia is called presbyopia.
How is farsightedness diagnosed?
Hyperopia can be detected during a routine eye examination. We recommend an eye health and vision check once a year. However, if you are worried about your eyesight, you can have an eye check at any time.
What help is available?
Hyperopia can be compensated for with glasses or contact lenses, which change the angle of refraction of light rays. Spectacles are the most commonly chosen corrective measure
Although farsightedness is not curable, the good news is that it can be easily corrected by using glasses or contact lenses with a plus lens power such as +3.00. This means that the lenses have a convex shape that helps to improve the focusing of the image.
Adults can also opt for laser eye surgery to treat hyperopia. Your eye care professional will be able to help you choose the best option for you.
