Tearful eye

What are watery eyes?

It occurs when the eyes produce too many tears or cannot drain properly. This problem can occur in anyone and can cause blurred vision, soreness of the eyelids, general discomfort, irritation, and gluing of the eyes.

What are the symptoms of watery eyes?

Common symptoms:

  • Blurred vision
  • Eyelid pain
  • Irritation

What causes watery eyes?

There are several possible causes. Normally, glands in the eyelids secrete an oily substance that slows down the evaporation of tears when you blink. When these glands do not function properly, dry patches can appear in the eyes; this is called dry eye syndrome. These patches become painful, a reflex response is triggered and the eyes start to produce more tears. This is the most likely cause of the condition of watery eyes.

Other possible causes:

  • The lower eyelid droops downwards away from the eye, making it harder for tears to reach the outflow channels;
  • Eyelids drooping inwards;
  • Inflammation of the eyelid margins;
  • Blocked or narrowed tear ducts;
  • Eye irritation (e.g. due to evaporation of chemicals or sand);
  • Eye infections such as conjunctivitis;
  • Allergies.

How is the diagnosis of watery eyes performed?

For many people, eye irritation does not last long and usually goes away on its own.

However, if you have frequent watery eyes, or if you have noticed that your vision is blurred, or if you have pain in your eyes, you should visit your eye care professional. He or she will be able to identify the possible causes and recommend the most appropriate treatment for you.

What help is available?

If your eyes are constantly watering, or if you have swelling or bumps around your eyes, visit an eye care professional at Optikos Pasaulio. He will identify your symptoms.

If you suffer from dry eye syndrome, you may be prescribed moisturising eye drops, advised to avoid activities that aggravate your symptoms, or trained in simple eye hygiene.

Your GP may also prescribe additional medicines if an allergic or infectious cause is identified. In some cases, you may be referred to an ophthalmologist for a more detailed examination of the tear ducts.
